PickupBender™ Select X10 STO Option

The PickupBender™ Select X10, which normally extends the versatility of a standard 5-way selector switch, can also be installed as a straight-to-output (STO) switch. An STO switch (sometimes called a blower switch) connects a pickup directly to the output jack.

You can install the Select X10 STO option on any type of pickup in any guitar with any number of pickups and any type of selector switch. Also, when you install the Select X10 as an STO switch in a 3-pickup guitar with a 5-way selector switch, it still provides the missing pickup combos just like the standard installation.

STO Installation
For the most part, the STO option installation is similar to the standard Select X10. Basically, you connect the pickup output to the Select X10, which switches the signal between the volume control (or selector switch) and output jack.

First, hookup the volume or tone pot connections using the instructions in the Install PickupBender™ section of the Select X10 User Guide. Then, follow the instructions below to connect the Select X10 switch connections.
  1. Locate the wire coming directly from the pickup that connects to either the volume pot or selector switch. Cut this wire so that the cut ends will reach the Select X10 switch connector and strip ¼ inch from the cut ends.

  2. If one or both of the pickup wire cut ends of are too short to reach the Select X10 switch connector, use a length of hookup wire (included in the install kit) to extend the short wire as follows:
    1. Cut the hookup wire long enough to extend the short wire to the Select X10 switch connector plus another ½ inch. Strip ¼ inch from both ends of the hookup wire.
    2. Connect the short pickup wire to one end of the hookup wire using a B connector from the install kit.
    3. Repeat for the other pickup wire cut end if needed.

  3. Insert the cut end of the pickup wire coming from the pickup into the P slot of the Select X10 switch connector and tighten the screw.

  4. Insert the other cut end of the pickup wire into the S slot of the Select X10 switch connector and tighten the screw.

  5. Locate the wire connected to the output jack tip (hot) lug. Cut the output jack wire so that the cut ends will reach the Select X10 switch connector and strip ¼ inch from the cut ends.

  6. If both output jack wire cut ends reach the Select X10 switch connector, insert both ends into the O slot and tighten the screw.

  7. If both of the output jack wire cut ends are too short to reach the Select X10 switch connector, use a length of hookup wire (included in the install kit) to extend the cut ends as follows:
    1. Cut the hookup wire long enough to extend both ends of the output jack wire to the Select X10 switch connector plus another ½ inch. Strip ¼ inch from both ends of the hookup wire.
    2. Connect both ends of the cut output jack wire to one end of the hookup wire using a B connector from the install kit.
    3. Insert the other end of the hookup wire into the O slot of the Select X10 switch connector and tighten the screw.
Pulling the Select X10 switch out engages the STO option for the connected pickup. This bypasses the selector switch and volume pot and connects the pickup directly to the output jack. Push the Select X10 switch back in to return to standard wiring.
