Before doing anything else, eliminate any external problems such as cables, effects, and even your amp to isolate the problem to the guitar by doing the following:
  1. Plug your guitar's cable directly into your amp.
  2. Try more than one guitar cable.
  3. If you're using your amp's effects loop, unplug the send and return cables.
  4. If you have another guitar, try it with your amp.
  5. If you have another amp, try it with your guitar.
